FreeMind as a File System Browser
FreeMind is an open source tool for developing mind maps, which are a popular method for visual outlining used for brainstorming, project management, and data organization. FreeMind is also a software package that can take a structured data set and display it in a visual tree-and-branch layout. One type of data that it can display is a graphical representation of your file system.
The file system browser is built into all versions of FreeMind. To access this, choose “Modes” from the tool bar menu and then pick “File” from the drop-down menu. You can also access file mode from the keyboard by pressing “Alternate + 3.”
When you enter file mode, you will see a representation of your computer’s file system in mind map format. In the oval at the center is “Root.” For Windows users not used to this notation, this is your top-level directory, usually C:. Branching out from the center ovals are your files, shown in black text, and your folders, shown in gray text. Each node is hyperlinked. Clicking a link opens that file or folder with your system’s default application. Clicking an executable file runs that program.
Navigating FreeMind
You can navigate your file system within FreeMind just as you would navigate any other mind map. Clicking on a folder node expands it to reveal its underlying structure. There are no stated limits to the depth of nodes you can explore this way with FreeMind free download. However, for deep file systems, your screen can quickly become cluttered with open trees, as you delve into the sub folders.
The “File Map” mode behaves differently than a regular mind map. You cannot modify this map or export it like a normal mind map. If you want to edit it, you can bring part of your file system into a mind map. Open a new file and choose “File | Import | Folder Structure” from the menu. You can now modify or format this copy of your file system to meet your needs.
Searching and Using Maps
